This is an exciting time in Redcar & Cleveland where we are pleased to be part of the No Wrong Door – Strengthening Families Protecting Children programme; a pioneering way of providing support to young people who are in our care, or on the edge of care.
The No Wrong Door programme, which was devised by North Yorkshire County Council, is one of three innovative models selected by the Department for Education as part of an £84 million investment to support eighteen local authorities across the country to improve work with families and safely reduce the number of children entering care.
No Wrong Door has already radically improved the life chances of troubled young people elsewhere, many of whom experienced long-term neglect and trauma throughout their childhoods and were likely to have needed to be taken into the care of the local authority without this intervention.
No Wrong Door has helped to reduce North Yorkshire’s looked-after population by 18 per cent in five years and has led to a £2m year-on-year saving. The vast majority of young people (86%) referred to No Wrong Door remain out of the care system and the local authority’s use of residential placements has fallen by half since they implemented this approach.
North Yorkshire Council are also able to demonstrate other significant positive outcomes for the young people involved with No Wrong Door; Most of them remain engaged in education, employment or training and levels of criminal activity amongst the cohort has reduced by almost 40 per cent.
The success of No Wrong Door is built on a multi-agency approach to support. Each young person has a key worker who sticks with them through thick and thin, supporting them to access the right services at the right time and in the right place to meet their individual needs. It is a tough love approach for those who have had a lifetime of experiencing rejection and failure.
We are immensely proud that No Wrong Door is now coming to Redcar and Cleveland after our successful bid to the Department for Education to enable us to work with North Yorkshire to adopt the model locally. We are currently working towards a launch of the programme in August this year.
The main hub will be on the outskirts of Redcar, in a beautifully refurbished former care home that offers outstanding facilities for the multi-agency team who will be based there to support some of our most vulnerable young people.
No Wrong Door is much more than the interventions and practice in the ‘hub’. Its foundations are built on transformational change in culture, systems and practice in working with young people in and on the edge of care and we want people to join us who share this vision.

We are currently looking to recruit a Manager and two Deputy Managers to help establish the ground-breaking initiative, which is expected to become operational in August this year.
